INSPIRE A YOUTH:
Become a Foster Family

LEAD BY EXAMPLE!  DID YOU KNOW YOU COULD BE THE IDEAL CANDIDATE(S)?

WISH:
We often say that we do not get to choose our family.  However, children and youth up to 18 years of age, from your community, are wishing for you to do just that… choose them!  Choose them to love and protect, to be a part of a family, to have a place they can call home.

DILEMMA:
We have approximately 120 dedicated and loving foster families in Stormont Dundas and Glengarry.  Unfortunately, we need many more.  The SDG Children’s Aid Society cares for approximately 360 children yearly.  Nearly 20% of our children currently reside in a group home setting, often outside our jurisdiction, because we cannot find a family for them in this community.  In addition to this problem, some of our foster homes actually have too many children in care residing with them.  If children are to flourish, it is important that they receive the attention they deserve.  We need to do this by focusing on one child or sibling group at a time.

GOAL:
With this recruitment campaign, our goal is to have more than 200 foster families available for our children.  Foster families are supported through education, ongoing assistance and respite care, as well as financial supports for the child’s care, food and clothing.  Compensation received is not considered taxable income.

CANDIDATE:
To become a foster family, you do not need a fancy home or years of experience as a parent.  You do not need to quit your job to be a stay at home parent.  However, you do need to be compassionate, caring, trusting – and having a sense of humour is always helpful.  The Society is searching for people from all walks of life, backgrounds and interests who are interested in making a difference in one child’s life.

SOLUTION:
Fostering is a rewarding experience, a chance to make a difference one child at a time.  We need more extraordinary people to consider becoming foster parents, to be a safe harbour to children and youth in need.
